Older people’s group welcomes visit from Waste Officers

23 May 2012

A group for older people in Chester has found out about the borough’s new recycling and waste collection service following a visit from Council officers.

The Older People’s Network welcomed two Waste Officers to their meeting to find out more about the Recycle First service.

The Network meets regularly to ensure that the views and concerns of older people are heard.

The user-led group is supported by Cheshire West and Chester Council and holds local forum meetings and events across the borough.

Councillor Lynn Riley, Executive Member for Community and Environment, said: “Effective communication between partners and residents is vital to the success of our new recycling and waste collection service.

“I’m delighted that the Older People’s Network organised this visit for their members to complement our awareness-raising activities for the new service.”

A full engagement programme will be undertaken in the Chester area during July and August.

This will include information leaflets, roadshows, doorstep engagement and communications forum presentations, to ensure residents are ready for the new service to commence in October.

Chair of the Older People’s Network Pat Lott said: “We are very grateful that the Waste officers came to visit our Chester meeting.

“Everyone was able to ask questions and find out everything they wanted to know about the changes to their bin collections.

“We are always keen to welcome new members and are planning more guest speakers for our future meetings.”

The meeting also included a session of gentle chair exercises (which are optional) and refreshments.

The next Chester meeting will be 19 July at the Queen Street Christian Centre (behind Tesco). Other local meetings are held in Vale Royal, Blacon, and Ellesmere Port and possibly soon in Neston and Malpas.  Membership is free.
