Christmas starts in Ellesmere Port as residents invited to take part in month-long celebration

27 November 2012

Christmas is coming early to Ellesmere Port as residents are invited to get involved in a month-long programme of celebrations.

Kickstarting December is the official lights switch in Civic Square as members of the community come together to see the town lit up to celebrate the start of the festive season.

Starting at 4pm on Thursday November 29, local school children and the Port Harmony Choir will be singing carols and lighting up their handmade lanterns around the Christmas tree.

Dee 106 will play live music at the event; Reverend Gordon McGuinness will bless the town and hand over to Mayor of Ellesmere Port, Pat Merrick to officially switch on the lights.

Executive Member for Culture and Recreation, Councillor Stuart Parker, said: “Ellesmere Port town centre will come to life this December – kick-starting with the official lights switch on this Thursday.

“All of the Christmas activities are the result of great partnerships between the Council’s Our Place team, the Town Centre Manager, local businesses, organisations and schools - fully supported by councillors.

“I hope all local residents will come to the town centre and get involved in the programme of events, which promise something for everyone. What a fitting close to what has been a fantastic year for Ellesmere Port.”

The Port Arcades has a host of Christmas entertainment each weekend including a Christmas Craft Weekend (1 and 2 December), Musical Theatre (6 December), The Gliding Angels (15 December) and Chrimbots Christmas Robots (22 December).

Other Christmas activities in Ellesmere Port this year include the popular Santa Cruises at the National Waterways Museum, the Ellesmere Port Music Society annual carol concert at the Civic Hall on December 15 and the return of the Ice Masters as they produce festive ice carvings in Civic Square (6 December) and Port Arcades on 22 December.
The Council’s Our Place team will also be hosting a free Santa’s Grotto in the market which has been supported by the Plus Dane Group and Ellesmere Port Lions and local councillors, through their Member Budget Grants, have brought a free Victorian carousel on the civic square from the 13 to 16 December for all to enjoy.

Ellesmere Port Market is running a ‘12 Days of Christmas’ competition with the chance to win £100 in Market vouchers, the draw will be on December 20. The Market also welcomes a first for Ellesmere Port with the visit by an incredible walking dinosaur with the Jurassic Experience (15 and 16 December).

The Our Place Team, PCSOs and Community Safety Wardens will be delivering Winter Warmth Bags to some of our elderly and vulnerable adults sponsored and nominated by Elected Members, to help them stay warm over the cold and wet spell.

Mayor of Ellesmere Port, Councillor Pat Merrick, said: “It has been such an exciting year in Ellesmere Port; we’ve had a Jubilee celebration, the Paralympic Torch, the opening of the new University Church of England Academy and the second largest Marks and Spencer in the country.

“Now we have a fabulous programme of festivities to look forward to in the lead up to Christmas.”
