Make a big lunch date with your neighbours
28 June 2010
Residents throughout West Cheshire are being asked to get involved with their community next month by setting a Big Lunch date with their neighbours.
The Big Lunch is an annual event, developed by The Eden Project and supported by a whole range of partners, which encourages neighbours to get together, in the street, in a park or garden, even in a car park and meet, share stories and have fun.
On Sunday, 18 July thousands of Big Lunch events will take place across the country and West Cheshire is no exception.
Councillor Lynn Riley, Executive Member for Community and Environment said: “Bringing people of all ages and all walks of life together to share food and fun has proven to create lasting friendships between neighbours.
“And there is so much more to this than just the fun part. Statistics show there to be significant gaps in our society, gaps between old and young, rich and poor and in many places people do not know their neighbours’ names anymore and may be living alone and isolated.
“People in any area coming together just on one day to eat lunch, to laugh, to share stories and skills and to have fun could actually help to tackle a range of social issues and add to the sense of community spirit.
“I would encourage all West Cheshire residents to find out about their local event and go down to what promises to be a great day.”
To find out about Big Lunch events in your area please visit The Big Lunch website and type in your postcode. Communities who have organised events should ensure that they register their plans on the Big Lunch website for maximum attendance.
