Cheshire West and Chester Regulatory Services warn of Council tax scam
7 October 2010
Cheshire West and Chester’s Trading Standards is advising residents to be extra vigilant following reports of telephone cold callers targeting the area.
Callers, claiming to be Council staff, are advising householders that they have been placed in the wrong council tax bracket and are due for a refund.
The bogus caller then asks for personal details - including how long the resident has lived at the property and, more worryingly, for bank account details.
Councillor Lynn Riley, said: “Cheshire West and Chester Council would never telephone residents in this way to advise them of a council tax band reduction refund – we need to make it clear that any calls of this nature are a hoax.
“Our Trading Standards team advise residents never to provide personal details to cold callers, particularly bank account details.
“Residents are advised to stay alert, never release personal information and, if uneasy, ask questions or terminate the call.”
