Chester residents encouraged to take up Back 2 Badminton courses
14 September 2010
A special event has been held in Chester city centre to promote the Back 2 Badminton scheme which began this week at Cheshire County Sports Club.
Cheshire West and Chester Council Sports Development, in partnership with Badminton England, created a badminton court on Eastgate Street and invited members of the public to try the sport with guidance from England Under 21 international Jamie Bonsells.
A representative from Christleton Junior Badminton Club was also there handing out information to interested junior players.
The idea of the event was to promote the Back 2 Badminton sessions that started this week at Cheshire County Sports Club. Led by a qualified coach, they are aimed at reintroducing adults to a sport which they may have played in their school days.
“Chester is an area with a strong tradition in badminton with a well established club structure” said Upton Councillor Pat Lott.
“The Back 2 Badminton scheme will hopefully compliment this as the Council will be looking to signpost participants from these sessions in to local clubs or on to other recreational opportunities to play badminton.
“As someone who played a lot of badminton and a member of a team who played in the league, I really hope this is a successful venture.”
Claire Wright, Badminton Development Officer said: “The launch event in Chester city centre was a unique way of promoting the sport to the largest number of Chester residents as possible.
“It was exciting to see local people giving the activity a go and hopefully this has gone some way to re-engaging people with the sport.”
Courses at Cheshire County Sports Club run in blocks of either six or seven sessions and although the current block has started there are spaces available if people want to join late or sign up for the next block starting in early November. There are two sessions available each week on a Monday from 5pm - 6pm and 6pm - 7pm. There is a cost of £3 per session.
